Kolposkopia Gdańsk
Colposcopy is a specialist gynecological examination that allows for a precise assessment of the cervix, vagina and vulva. It is a key diagnostic tool in the prevention of cervical cancer. At Mediss Medical in Gdańsk, we perform colposcopy using a modern colposcope.
The examination is quick, safe and painless, and its results can save lives. That is why it is worth doing, especially after an abnormal cytology or a positive HPV test.
What is colposcopy?
Colposcopy is an examination on the border of gynecology and oncology, which involves a thorough examination of the surface of the cervix, vagina and vulva using a colposcope – an optical device with a magnification and lighting system.
During the examination, the doctor may use special fluids (acetic acid solution and Lugol’s solution) that show disturbing changes in the epithelium. If necessary, it is also possible to take a tissue sample (biopsy) or perform the so-called curettage of the cervical canal.
Colposcopy takes about 10-20 minutes, does not require anesthesia, and the patient can immediately return to her daily activities.
Indications for colposcopy
Colposcopy is most often performed as part of in-depth diagnostics after an abnormal cytology result or a positive HPV test result. Here are the most common indications:
- abnormal cytology (ASC-US, LSIL, HSIL, AGC, etc.),
- HPV infection (especially oncogenic types: 16, 18),
- contact bleeding (e.g. after intercourse),
- recurrent inflammation of the cervix,
- suspected erosions, polyps or precancerous conditions,
- control of lesions after cervical treatment,
- the presence of lesions within the vulva or vagina.
How does colposcopy at Mediss Medical work?
- Medical history and preparation of the patient – the doctor conducts a short conversation and informs about the course of the examination.
- Magnified viewing of the cervix – the patient lies in the gynaecological chair, and the doctor assesses the epithelium with the help of a speculum and colposcope.
- The application of diagnostic reagents – acetic acid and Lugol’s solution help to visualize cellular changes.
- Biopsy (if necessary) – the doctor may take tissue samples for histopathological examination.
- Conclusion and recommendations – the patient receives information about the initial result and possible next steps.
How to prepare for colposcopy?
- The test is best performed between the 10th and 20th day of the cycle (i.e. after menstruation).
- 24 hours before the test, avoid intercourse, irrigation and the use of vaginal preparations.
- Do not perform the test during menstruation or a severe vaginal infection.
- You should bring previous results of cytology, HPV, histopathology (if available).
Does colposcopy hurt?
No. The examination is completely painless. There may be only slight discomfort comparable to a classic gynecological examination. In the case of a biopsy, a temporary, slight “pinching” sensation is possible.
Colposcopy and cervical cancer – why is it so important?
Cervical cancer develops slowly – it can be asymptomatic for many years, going through the stages of the so-called precancerous lesions. Colposcopy allows you to detect these changes at an early stage, when treatment is fast, effective and completely possible. This is one of the most important preventive examinations for women of all ages, especially those who are sexually active and over 30.
