Cytology
Cytological examination is the most important form of cervical cancer prevention. If performed regularly, it allows you to detect precancerous changes and cancer at an early but curable stage of the disease.
Cervical cancer is currently one of the most common cancers in women in the world. Its development is initiated by chronic infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). To detect it, cytology is performed.
Cytology – a key test in the prevention of women’s health at Mediss Medical Clinic
Pap smear, also known as the Papanicolaou test or Pap test, is a fundamental tool in the prevention of cervical cancer and other gynecological conditions. Regular Pap smear tests are crucial for the early detection of precancerous lesions and cervical cancer, which significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.
Pap smear test is a test that involves taking cells from the cervix and analyzing them microscopically. This procedure allows for the assessment of the health of the cervical epithelial cells and the detection of possible abnormalities that may suggest the presence of a precancerous condition or cancer. The test is quick, painless and extremely effective in identifying lesions that could develop towards cancer.
Indications for cytology
Regular Pap smear tests are recommended for all women between the ages of 21 and 65. It is especially important for women who:
- They started their sex life.
- They have a history of HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection.
- They have other risk factors for cervical cancer, such as early onset of sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, or smoking.
Advantages of Pap smear test
- Early detection of lesions: Pap smears allow for early detection of precancerous lesions and cervical cancer, which is crucial for effective treatment.
- Safety: It is a safe, non-invasive and painless test.
- Quick and simple: The examination takes only a few minutes and does not require any special preparation on the part of the patient.
The course of the cytological examination
Pap smear examination is performed by a gynaecologist on an outpatient basis. Here’s what the whole process looks like:
- Preparation: The patient lies down in the gynaecological chair. The doctor inserts a speculum into the vagina to access the cervix.
- Collecting the material: Using a special brush, the doctor collects cells from the surface of the cervix.
- Laboratory analysis: The cells are then collected onto a microscope slide and sent to a laboratory where they are analyzed under a microscope.
Convalescence after the examination
After the examination, the patient can return to her daily activities. There may be some minor spotting or discomfort, but these are usually short-lived and do not require any special care.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does a Pap smear test hurt?
Usually, a Pap smear test is painless. Patients may experience only slight discomfort during sample collection.
- How often should I have a Pap smear test?
It is recommended to perform cytology every three years in women aged 21-65. If you have additional risk factors, your doctor may recommend more frequent tests.
- Can cytology be performed during menstruation?
It is not recommended to perform cytology during menstruation, as blood may affect the test results. It is best to schedule the test for the time between one menstrual cycle and another.
- Is the cytology result available immediately?
Cytology results are usually available after a few days, when samples are thoroughly analyzed in the laboratory.
