Vasectomy Gdańsk – Male Contraception

Male Contraception at Mediss Medical Clinic in Gdańsk

Vasectomy is a safe microsurgical procedure widely chosen by men around the world who either do not wish to have children or have completed their families. The procedure involves blocking the transport of sperm into the ejaculate by cutting and sealing the vas deferens. Vasectomy has been a popular method of male contraception for many years and is widely practiced globally. Statistical data shows that 20% of men over 35 in the USA have undergone vasectomy, with around 600,000 procedures performed each year in the USA and up to 7 million in China. The method is also gaining popularity in Poland. Sperm production is not halted by the procedure – sperm are simply reabsorbed by the body with no side effects for the patient. Recovery is quick, and once laboratory tests confirm the absence of sperm in the ejaculate, fertility is considered fully eliminated.
Vasectomy has no negative impact on the patient’s sexual function. In fact, by removing the fear of unplanned pregnancy, it often improves sexual well-being. The procedure does not affect libido or erectile function. The absence of sperm in semen is imperceptible to both the patient and their partner – semen retains its normal appearance, consistency, and taste. The only way to detect the absence of sperm is through laboratory analysis. Male hormone levels remain unaffected.

However, studies show that younger men – especially under the age of 25 – are more likely to regret undergoing a vasectomy. The decision should therefore be carefully considered and based on personal, familial, and reproductive circumstances.

Mediss Medical Center Gdańsk reserves the right for the physician to refuse the procedure if it could have a negative impact on the patient’s physical or mental health. Potential post-procedure regret or desire for future children is also taken into account.

What Are the Benefits of WBS Vasectomy?

  • High effectiveness: Vasectomy is one of the most effective methods of male contraception, with a success rate of up to 99.9%.
  • Minimally invasive: The WBS technique is minimally traumatic to tissues, ensuring shorter recovery time compared to traditional methods.
  • Quick return to daily activities: Most patients resume normal activities within a few days.
  • Pain-free procedure: Thanks to local anesthesia, the procedure is virtually painless.
  • Low risk of complications: WBS vasectomy carries a very low risk of infection or hematoma.

How Is Vasectomy Performed at Mediss Medical Clinic Gdańsk?

  • Consultation: The first step is a consultation. Our urologist in Gdańsk will assess your health, explain the procedure, and answer all your questions.
  • Preparation: It is recommended to avoid food and drink for several hours before the procedure.
  • Procedure: The surgery usually lasts 15–30 minutes. A small 6–7 mm incision is made in the scrotum to access the vas deferens, which are then cut and sealed with titanium clips.
  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is used, so the patient is awake but feels no pain.
  • Post-op: The incision is so small that stitches are not needed – a small dressing is sufficient.

What Is Recovery Like After WBS Vasectomy?

  • Rest: It is advised to rest for the first 24–48 hours and avoid strenuous activity. Tight underwear may help support the scrotum.
  • Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry; avoid baths for the first few days.
  • Abstinence: Refrain from sexual activity for about one week after surgery.
  • Follow-up visit: Attend a follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing and exclude complications.

How Effective Is Vasectomy?

Vasectomy is among the most effective contraceptive methods, with a 99.9% success rate. However, full contraceptive effect is not immediate. Sperm may still be present in the ejaculate shortly after the procedure. A semen analysis is typically done two months after surgery, and a second test may be needed 30 days later.
Experts agree that complete azoospermia (absence of sperm) may only be confirmed around three months post-procedure. Until then, alternative contraception is advised.

Post-Vasectomy Recommendations

  • Use backup contraception: Until semen analysis confirms azoospermia, additional contraception is necessary.
  • Regular testing: In some cases, more than one test is needed to confirm sterility.
  • Doctor consultation: Contact your doctor with any questions or concerns.

Are there any complications after a vasectomy?

Although a vasectomy is a safe and minimally invasive procedure, like any medical procedure, it may be associated with certain, usually mild and temporary discomforts. Fortunately, most patients recover without major problems, and any symptoms go away on their own after a few days. Here’s what can happen:

Swelling and hematoma – After the procedure, there may be slight bruising or swelling of the scrotum – this is a natural reaction of the body that goes away on its own in a short time. Sometimes a hematoma, a small collection of blood under the skin, may occur, also temporary.

Discomfort or pain in the testicles – Some patients may experience discomfort or mild pain in the area of the testicles, which usually goes away after a few days. In rare cases, it may last longer, but usually does not significantly affect the comfort of everyday functioning.

Wound infection – As with any surgical procedure, there is a minimal risk of infection at the incision site. Therefore, it is important to maintain good hygiene and observe your skin – if you notice any redness, purulent discharge or a high temperature, you should consult your doctor.

Small amount of blood in semen – A trace of blood may appear in your semen within a few weeks of a vasectomy (usually within 6–8 weeks). This is completely normal and should not cause concern.

Seminal granuloma – In some men, a small, palpable lump may develop at the site of the ductus deferens being cut. A so-called seminal granuloma usually does not cause pain and does not pose a threat – however, if in doubt, it is worth discussing it with your doctor.

Chronic scrotal pain (very rare) – In very rare cases, chronic pain in the scrotum may occur. Although this is rare, there are treatment options and patient support available for persistent symptoms.

Why Is Semen Testing After Vasectomy Important?

Semen testing after vasectomy confirms whether the procedure was successful and ensures that the patient is infertile. If you’d prefer to collect your sample at home, it must be delivered to the lab within 60 minutes. Ideally, this should happen within 30 minutes, keeping the sample at body temperature – avoid overheating or cooling.

When Should Semen Be Tested?

Semen analysis is typically performed 8–16 weeks after the procedure. This time allows remaining sperm to clear from the vas deferens. During this period, 20–30 ejaculations are recommended to help flush out residual sperm.
Before sample collection, refrain from ejaculation for 2–5 days.

Sample Collection Procedure:

  • Collecting the sample: After cleaning the genital area, collect the semen via masturbation into a sterile container provided by the clinic or purchased at a pharmacy.
  • Transport: Deliver the sample to the lab as soon as possible, ideally within 30 minutes, at room temperature.
  • Analysis: The sample is examined under a microscope to confirm the presence or absence of sperm. Results are usually available within a few days.

Interpreting Semen Analysis Results:

  • No sperm (azoospermia): Confirms vasectomy success. The patient is sterile.
  • Non-motile sperm present: Inactive sperm may still be present. Repeat testing may be needed.
  • Live sperm present: The procedure may need to be repeated or further testing performed.
